The 10 Best Skateboard Wheels for Cruising

Ricta Clouds 78a Skateboard Wheel

Ricta 54mm Clouds White 78a Skateboard Wheels
  • Smooth-rolling and fast 78A soft urethane with a solid, 78D core. Clouds make even the roughest of surfaces feel like smooth warehouse floors. Modern-shaped and not heavy or bulky. Perfect for filming and just cruising.

The best skateboard wheels for cruising are the Ricta Clouds Skateboard wheels. These wheels are perfect for cruising, but they are also great for trick riding. The formula is high rebound urethane which is super smooth with massive grip.

Ricta Clouds are perfect if you don’t want a heavy setup. They are lightweight and have a modern shape without adding bulk. In addition, the Ricta Clouds skateboard wheels are versatile and are great for street, park and small ramps.

The core on the inside is a bit bigger, making the wheels firmer. However, they have the same shape as a harder skate wheel, so there is not a lot of adjustment to get used to compared to wider cruising wheels, so the transition phase is good.

Ricta Clouds are a smaller wheel so that you can feel more road vibrations, but they are still smooth like butter.

These skateboard wheels are suitable for cruising the streets, but they are not great for long distance cruising. I suggest getting larger wheels if you just want to cruise, but the Ricta Clouds are great for short commutes and trick riding.

They are fast and responsive and can handle sidewalks, asphalt and the roughest roads. Some of the best skateboarders of all time ride Ricta Clouds.

What makes Ricta Clouds the best skateboard wheels for cruising? Besides being perfect for cruising on the street, they feel like you are floating on air and clouds. They are soft but not too soft and keep your feet comfortable and prevent them from hurting after a long day of riding.

Powell Peralta Rat Bones

Powell Peralta Rat Bones Skateboard Wheels 60mm 90a - Blue
  • Wheel Diameter = 60mm
  • Wheel Width = 40mm
  • Hardness/Durometer = 90A
  • Wheel Shape: RAT BONE
  • Country of Origin: USA

Powell Peralta is one of the best skateboard brands on the market. The Rat Bones skateboard wheels are 60mm with an 85a durometer and are comfortable, fast, durable and an excellent value for money.

While riding the rat bones, you will feel like you are going at a constant and controlled speed the entire time.

They’re big enough to absorb bumps and cracks in the road that cause you to “eat it” but are still light enough for pulling off some flip tricks. The Rat Bones are a fantastic mix between hard and small skate wheels and fat and soft wheels that ride over everything.

Powell Peralta Rat Bones are old school wheels with a classic look perfect for any skateboard.

They have a smooth wheel surface with a good amount of grip. They handle rough and smooth sidewalks very well and are forgiving around corners.

Unfortunately, these wheels are a little heavy, so they are not great for flat ground tricks or tricks in general. However, they are one of the best skateboard wheels for cruising.

The core is offset, so they eventually mush out on the edges of the wheel. If you get wheel bite, I recommend tightening the trucks or getting ¼” risers.

Not only does Powell Peralta have some great skateboard wheels, but they also have one of the best skateboard decks on the market.

OJ Mini Super Juice Skateboard Wheels

OJ Mini Super Juice Skateboard Wheels make you feel like you are gliding as you ride.

The 55mm 78a super juice urethane formula wheels are smooth, fast and durable. The urethane is ultra-buttery, and the anti-flake shaped wheels easily roll over cracks, debris and small rocks.

The 55mm wheel feels like a regular skateboard wheel so that you can do tricks. The wheels are small enough to keep your skateboard lightweight, which is perfect for ollie up onto curbs.

I don’t recommend grinding on the OJ Mini’s as they will quickly chunk and destroy your wheel. While the minis are smaller, you may still get wheel bite, so I suggest getting a 1/8 riser to prevent wheel bite.

The OJ Mini Super Juice Skateboard wheels are a slimmed down version of OJ’s. The minis are smooth wheels with a durable plastic core and shiny coating. The Mini’s are grippy at first, but it wears away quickly, but they have excellent cornering grip.

These wheels do feel a bit hard, and the urethane bubbles near the ride surface may cause the wheels to chunk.

  • The all-new Bigfoot cruisers offer a smooth rolling, 83a urethane on a typical street-sized skateboard wheel. Fast and quiet, these are ideal for riding the roughest spots. Filmers love these wheels!
  • The hard plastic core allows for precision bearing alignment which keeps these wheels rolling fast (Soft wheels without a core put restrictive pressure on bearings during turns which slows you down)
  • At 32mm wide, we pretty much took a normal street wheel and scaled the durometer down to 83a
  • A high-rebound Formula makes these wheels fast and smooth. Additionally, soft 83a wheels are perfect for introducing new skaters to smooth riding.

Bigfoot Skateboard Wheels are the best skateboard wheels for cruising and tricks.

The 53mm wheels have a durometer or hardness of 83A and are made with a urethane formula used on typical street sized skateboard wheels. The Cruiser Filmer wheels are great for beginners or people looking to transition to wider wheels.

Bigfoot Skateboard wheels are smooth, fast, quiet, and great for street riding. While these wheels are not suitable for sliding, they are the best skateboard wheels for rough roads.

Bigfoot Cruiser skateboard wheels have excellent shock absorption, and the wheels are hard enough not to bounce while doing tricks and still have a lot of pop.

The hard plastic core allows precision bearing alignment to keep you rolling fast. But these wheels are smaller and slower than other cruiser wheels, which is excellent for stability and trick skateboarding. In addition, Bigfoot Skateboard wheels are very affordable and come in multiple colors.

You can get a larger 55mm wheel for skating street, parks, vert ramps and bowls. They are also 83a, so they are still soft and can handle rough roads.

The 53s are better just for cruising as they may rip or chunk if you use them for too many tricks, but they are still great for trick skating.

Shark Wheels are known for their unique shape, and the 30° angle help reduces shock, and they deflect objects due to their approach angle. The California Rolls are fast, grippy, soft and good over rough roads.

There are multiple center points compared to traditionally shaped wheels which help riders move around most objects while keeping control.

While these wheels can’t be used for tricks as they are pretty bouncy, they are amazing cruiser skateboard wheels. The California Roll skateboard wheels are great for surf skateboards that are under 30″ and have excellent slide control.

Slides are much easier to perform as shark wheels have less surface area, so there is less friction during slides. As a result, shark wheels are the only cruiser wheels that can slide while feeling softer than most wheels of the same size.

Shark Wheel’s California Rolls last longer when cruising, so they will last you a long time. However, they are a bit more expensive than other wheels.

Nevertheless, these wheels do not need to be broken in, and you will notice a difference when you ride Shark Wheels.

What are the Best Skateboard Wheels for Cruising, and Why do You Need Them?

Cruising wheels are skateboard wheels that have been designed specifically for cruising.

Cruiser wheels are similar to other skateboard wheels, but they are created to work best for people who want to commute and travel long distances.

Cruising wheels are soft and slightly bigger than park and street wheels. One of the main features of cruising wheels is that they roll fast on any surface.

They offer a smooth ride that makes it fun, fast and easy to get around town. The best skateboard wheels for cruising can easily roll over cracks, rocks and any road debris you come across so you won’t fall off your skateboard.

Cruiser wheels are also referred to as filmer wheels as they roll smoother and handle rough pavement better, meaning you can film a steady shot.

If you are looking for the best longboard wheels for cruising, check out the post here. Also, if you are considering getting skateboard wheels as a gift for skateboarders, I recommend checking out the post before you buy!

4 Benefits of Using Cruiser Wheels

If you are looking at cruising with your skateboard, cruiser wheels come with many benefits over using standard skateboard wheels.

Cruiser wheels are suitable for beginners – Cruiser wheels are soft and safe, so you can get the feel of riding a skateboard before starting to try trick skateboarding.

Great for transportation – Cruising wheels are made for long-distance riding. They can quickly get you from point a to point b every day of the week.

Cruiser wheels are smooth – They can handle the roughest pavement and lots of debris vs other wheels.

Super comfortable – Cruiser wheels are designed to ride comfortably. They are larger, softer wheels that will help absorb any shocks from the road.

5 Things to Look for in the Best Skateboard Wheels for Cruising

When looking for the best skateboard wheels for cruising, the quality and width of the wheels are the most important thing to look for. So, what are the best skateboard wheels for cruising?

First, you should decide what style of cruising or your riding style. For example, do you want to cruise and commute, or do you want a hybrid where you cruise and do some tricks?

There are skateboard wheels with better features for cruising, while others can cruise and still be hard enough for trick skating.

The two most important things when looking for the best skateboard wheels for cruising are the hardness and size of the wheel. The hardness or durometer will affect how your wheels feel as they roll on the ground.

Softer wheels are great on any surface, including rough roads and debris. In contrast, harder wheels will be ideal for trick skating but may not ride as well over rough terrain.

OJ Super Juice Skateboard Wheels
Diameter

The diameter is the size of the wheel, and the size will affect your performance and how fast you accelerate and how tight you can turn.

Smaller wheels are lightweight, faster, and better for tricks; however, they require you to push more often.

While larger wheels are softer, absorb road vibrations and easily roll over cracked sidewalks.

What size skateboard wheels are best for cruising?

The ideal diameter for a cruising skateboard will be between a small trick skateboard wheel and a large soft longboard wheel. The length of your skateboard will also determine the size of your skateboard wheel.

The ideal range for the best skateboard wheels for cruising should be between 68mm to 72mm for decks between 34″ – 42″.

A 40″ deck requires a diameter ranging from 70mm-75mm. Diameters between 68mm – 72mm are ideal for Medium Decks at around 34″- 42″. For example, if you have a small 34″ deck, you can pick wheels with 53mm – 67mm diameter.

If your wheels are too big, above 58mm, you can also invest in some riser pads, which will help raise your board and help dampen some shocks and help prevent wheel bite.

Do you need new hardware? Check out the best skateboard hardware to help you find the right hardware for you.

Durometer (Hardness)

Durometer is the measurement of skateboard wheels’ hardness. The durometer of skateboard wheels will determine if they are better for cruising or riding at the skate park.

Generally, wheels made for cruisier are softer than wheels made for trick skateboarding. Skateboard wheels made for cruising are usually soft, wide and larger than other skateboard wheels.

The wheel’s hardness will dictate how much vibration from the road will be absorbed into the skateboard and the rider. Softer wheels are more comfortable as the softness will absorb vibrations from the road.

The larger and wider wheel helps skateboards easily and smoothly roll over sidewalks with cracks, rocks and debris.

If you are a heavier rider, you will need wheels that are a bit harder otherwise, the soft wheels can slow you down. The softer wheels will be harder to push if you are too lightweight.

When checking for the perfect durometer, look for wheels between 78a to 92a. These wheels are considered to be a soft wheel. Therefore, anything higher than 90a up to 98a is in the middle range, while anything from 99a and up will be too hard for cruising.

The softer the wheel, the more vibrations they will absorb, but they will be harder to push and unsuitable for tricks. Softer wheels are very bouncy, which will make your board bounce when you land a trick.

A harder wheel, like one with a durometer of 83a, will roll faster but absorb fewer vibrations.

Many of the wheels I recommend are suitable for both cruising and tricks, so they are harder but still great for cruising.

Wheel Shape

The shape or profile of skateboard wheels can affect how your wheels grip the road. When picking the best skateboard wheels for cruising, there are two wheel shapes to choose from.

Both sharp lip shaped wheels, and round lip shaped wheels are good for cruising. Square edges on wheels will give you better traction, and a sharp lip shaped wheel gives more grip during turns.

Round lip wheels are suitable for surf like slides and carving, while square lips have more grip. If you want to carve, get square lipped wheels.

Contact Patch

The contact patch on a skateboard wheel is the area that makes contact with the road. Larger wheels have larger contact patches, meaning body weight is distributed over a larger area.

Rounder wheels have less contact with the road, while square wheels will have more contact. Larger contact patches will provide more stability when cruising, ideal for safety.

A wide contact patch allows you to take sharp turns with more urethane to grip the road. However, they are heavier, slower and harder to push.

To find the best skateboard wheels for cruising, you should look for a wider contact patch on your wheels.

Formula

Most skateboard wheels are made with polyurethane which means the wheels are tough. However, they are durable and will not easily scrape or wear away.

The formula on a skateboard wheel is more important than the size of skateboard wheels for cruisers. The best formula will be soft enough to roll over rocks and debris while remaining firm to stay intact while performing tricks.

It doesn’t matter how big or small your wheel is if the polyurethane isn’t built for cruising.

FAQ

What skateboard wheels are the best for street cruising?

Softer skateboard wheels are best for cruising. However, you can get good soft skateboard wheels that aren’t too heavy or large. The formula you are looking for, and the durometer make the biggest difference.

Skateboard wheels for street skating are usually between 50mm – 60mm and have a durometer of 95-101a, while cruiser wheels are 54mm – 60mm with a durometer of 78a-90a, so ideally, the best street cruising skateboard wheel will have a durometer between78a -100a.

Therefore, I recommend either Ricta Cloud Skateboard wheels or Bigfoot Soft Cruiser Filmer Skateboard wheels for street cruising.

I recommend looking at the best skateboard trucks to help you make the perfect turns as your cruise down the street.

What are the best wheels for cruising only on bad roads?

Bigfoot Soft Cruiser Filmer Skateboard Wheels are the best wheels for cruising only on bad roads.

They are smooth, fast, quiet and excellent for street riding. However, they are soft enough to easily roll over rough roads, debris, cracks and small rocks.

What are good wheels for cruising and tricks?

The best skateboard wheel for cruising and tricks are Bigfoot Skateboard wheels. They are 53mm and have a hardness of 83A, perfect for both cruising and tricks.

In addition, the cruiser wheels are excellent for beginners as they are slightly wider than typical street skateboard wheels, making them an ideal transition wheel.

Bigfoot Cruiser skateboard wheels have excellent shock absorption, and the wheels are hard enough not to bounce while doing tricks and still have a lot of pop, thus making them the best skateboard wheels for cruising and doing tricks.

If you plan to do many tricks, I recommend staying safe and purchasing the best skateboard pads and the best skateboard helmets.

Are hard wheels good for cruising?

You can cruise on hard wheels, but it does mean you have more vibrations from the road, and it is easier to fall off your board when you hit rough roads, rocky areas and pebbles.

So, it is better to go with a softer bouncier wheel if you want to cruise; however, if you are looking for a good transition wheel that allows you to cruise and do tricks, you will want a slightly harder wheel.

I suggest getting the Ricta Cloud as they are the perfect everything wheel. They roll over cracks and pebbles while also having the ability to do trick riding.

Conclusion

If you want to use your skateboard for cruising while still maintaining a perfect board for trick skateboarding, you will want to get a pair of cruising skateboard wheels.

Not everyone who wants to cruise is interested in transitioning to a longboard. Finding a skateboard or a cruiser board that will allow you to cruise and do tricks at the skate park is easier when you have the right skateboard wheels.
